I believe a connected Europe is a stronger, more competitive Europe. And the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet is the bridge that finally connects our physical borders with our digital lives.
Work started with the 2014 eIDAS Regulation, but the real turning point came in June 2021, when the European Commission proposed a unified "Wallet" for every citizen.
After years of testing, the final legal framework was adopted in 2024, and the goal is to have a functional wallet in every Member State by late 2026.
🔑 What this means for us
Imagine a single, secure space on your phone that:
- Holds your ID, driving license, diplomas, and even medical prescriptions.
- Enables digital signatures with the same legal power as ink on paper, anywhere in the EU.
- Most importantly: Unlike the "big tech" logins we use today, this won't track us. It's built on trust, not data mining.
Spotlighting Greece
While many think of digital innovation coming from the North, Greece has emerged as a powerhouse in this transition.
Thanks to the early success of the Gov.gr Wallet (launched in 2022), we are already "digitally fluent." We have already developed the infrastructure to store Digital IDs, driving licenses, and even disability cards.
This means that we will likely be among the first to breeze through EU airports using only our phones, as we already do today within our borders.
